The four stages of Covid-19 transmission & why India ...

·        What is Coronavirus:

Coronavirus is a large family of the virus that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome(MERS-CoV), and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). A novel coronavirus (nCoV) is a new strain that has not been previously identified in humans.
Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals to people, detailed investigations found that SARS was transmitted from civet casts to humans and MERS from dromedary camels to humans.

·        Stages of Coronavirus:-
  •    Stage1- Important Cases: - when the virus has been transmitted by people traveling from abroad. It is the initial stage of the virus. In India the initial virus carriers are believed to be a group of Italians who later tested positive for COVID-19
  •     Stage2- Local Transmission: - When people come in contact with those who have a travel history to countries affected by a coronavirus, it is the second stage. India is currently in the second stage of the coronavirus outbreak.
  •      Stage3- Community transmission: - Community transmission happens when the infected person has not come in contact with anyone who has a travel history to the countries affected by a coronavirus. A large scale spread of the virus takes place in this stage. India has currently not reached this stage of virus speared.
  •     Stage4- Epidemic: - This is the last stage of an outbreak. This is what happened in china when large masses got infected and their areas an exponentially rising number of confirmed cases as well as deaths.

How we can keep IT in Stage 2 and 3rd: -
  • Quarantine; Anyone coming from countries affected by COVID-19 outbreak is being quarantined for 14 days, regarding symptoms.

  • Contact Tracking: - If a person has been found positive, everyone he or she may have come in contact with is put under surveillance. If they show any symptoms they are tested and quarantined too.

  • Stop Mass Gathering: - Most states have closed schools, cinema halls or are not organizing public events

  • Awareness: - the public is being made aware of hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette

  • Preparation: - scaling up infrastructure testing facility, isolation beds and acute management of positive cases- taking place simultaneously
